A mountain, a bow, and a spirit of adventure merge together in the journey of a bowman. Scott Enderich, the acting president of the American Bowman Club, is no stranger to this adventurous lifestyle. The American Bowman Club, tucked away in the rugged mountains outside of Bailey, Colorado, is a slice of heaven for those who appreciate archery and the great outdoors.
In the latest episode of The Mountain Side podcast, we had the chance to sit down with Scott to converse about all things outdoors, from archery to wildlife, and the intrinsic bond that binds us between them.
A Close Encounter With the Mountains
An episode of The Mountain Side podcast seldom commences without mentioning the heart and soul of the show - Outdoor life. In the episode featuring Scott Enderich, the essence of the mountains reverberated through the conversation.
As Scott described, the beauty isn't just having sucess as a backcounty bow bowhunter but in the setting that surrounds it. Discussing his experience at the American Bowman Club, perched amid the exquisite mountain setting, Scott revealed how the archery estate has evolved from being a hidden gem to a treasured hotspot for archery enthusiasts.
Discussing the club's phenomenal growth, he mentioned, "the club has seen growth hugely in the past two years." With now about 150 members, the club sees members shooting throughout the year, offering an idyllic escape to the mountainside and a chance to hone their archery skills.
The Wildlife Encounter: Understanding the Wilderness
A jaunt to the mountainside isn't solely an encounter with towering peaks and peaceful solitude. It's also an opportunity to come face-to-face with nature in its rawest form - the fascinating wilderness. During the conversation, Scott talked about his experiences intimately intertwined with the wildlife he encounters, from chasing antelopes in Fairplay to elk roars echoing through the mountains during September.
However, understanding the wildlife isn't just about being captivated by their presence, but also about respecting them and maintaining their habitat. Addressing recent ballot initiatives affecting mountain lions, lynx and bobcats in Colorado, Scott brought attention to the aspect of listening to biologists and making science-based decisions about wildlife management.
The Joy of Archery: A Community View
Beyond the breathtaking vistas and intriguing wildlife stories, the podcast delved into the cheerfulness of being part of a community. Scott expressed the joy and camaraderie that the American Bowman Club offers, saying, "It's easy to come in here and just talk and hang out with friends." From attending shoots and work parties to inspiring new ranges, the club provides a space where passion for archery cultivates friendships.
Over time, the American Bowman Club has become more than just a recreational space - it's a place where adults, youth, and families find a mutual passion and the freedom to chase their love for archery.
In the end, The Mountain Side podcast episode with Scott Enderich manifested as an ode to the mountains, complete with tales of adventures, wildlife encounters, and the collective joy of cherishing archery in a closely-knit community.
In the unforgettable words of Scott, "If you can handle the physical labor side of things, a lot of time we do have some older members who have a hard time doing a lot of the bucking targets and stuff like that. That's great because you can come, run a grill and you get your work party credits. Get a bow in someone's hands for the first time, it's just enjoyable."
"One should pass through this tiny fragment of time as nature wants them to." This quote by Marcus Aurelius sums up the essence of American Bowman Club and its members. The club allows members to connect with nature, experience the thrill of archery and most importantly, escape the bustle of their daily lives.
